For those embarking on the Hajj pilgrimage, understanding the sequence of rituals is essential for a smooth and accepted journey. While spiritually profound, Hajj is also a structured act of worship with specific steps that must be followed in the tradition of the prophets. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step overview of the key rituals.

Ihram and Intention: Before reaching Makkah, pilgrims enter a state of consecration known as Ihram. This is done at designated points (Mawaqit) and involves making a formal intention (Niyyah) and for men, donning two simple, unstitched white cloths. From this point on, certain actions like cutting hair, using perfume, and arguing are forbidden.
The Core Days of Hajj: The main rituals take place over five days, from the 8th to the 12th of Dhul Hijjah.

Day 1 (8th Dhul Hijjah): Pilgrims travel to Mina, a tent city on the outskirts of Makkah, where they spend the day and night in prayer and reflection.
Day 2 (9th Dhul Hijjah): This is the Day of Arafah, the most crucial day of Hajj. Pilgrims travel to the plain of Arafat and spend the day in supplication until sunset. After sunset, they move to Muzdalifah to spend the night under the open sky and collect pebbles for the next day's ritual.
Day 3 (10th Dhul Hijjah): The Day of Nahr (Sacrifice) is the busiest. Pilgrims first stone the largest pillar (Jamrat al-Aqaba) in Mina. This is followed by the animal sacrifice, and then shaving or trimming the hair, which marks the partial exit from Ihram. They then proceed to Makkah to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah (a mandatory circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sa'i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa).
Days 4 & 5 (11th & 12th Dhul Hijjah): Known as the Days of Tashreeq, pilgrims remain in Mina and stone all three pillars (Jamarat) each day.

Farewell Tawaf: Before leaving Makkah, every pilgrim must perform a final circumambulation of the Kaaba, known as Tawaf al-Wada'. This serves as a final farewell to the Sacred House, concluding the rites of Hajj.
